Using Pastels? This is What You Need

  • portable easel (Julian or other similar type)
  • pastels - minimum of 36 landscape colors. A variety of brands is recommended but not necessary for the class. Generally NuPastels and Rembrandts, which are harder than most, are used frequently to begin a piece, while softer brands such as Unison, Schminke, Sennellier are added later.
  • paper - Greg recommends Uart or Wallis brand pastel papers. One pad or 2-3 9x12 sheets per day should be plenty. In some cases, a limited supply of this paper may be available at workshops for purchase
  • mounting surface - gator board, foam core, or light plywood will be used to temporarily mount your paper to while painting.
  • masking tape - 3/4" to 1" wide to mount the paper to the board.
