Beginner Adult (18+) Watercolor

Time: Mondays, 10am-12pm 

Session Dates: 

  • Session 1:  August 25, September 8, 12 & 29  (Register by Aug. 23 @ 11pm)
  • Session 2:  November 3, 10, 17 & 24  (Register by Nov. 1 @ 11pm)
  • Make up day for anyone who misses 1 day will be Tuesday, Dec. 1

Supplies to Bring to Class:

A 9”x12” Spiral-bound Cold pressed watercolor paper/140 lb. min. weight.


All other supplies will be provided for you for the first 2 classes. After experiencing painting with the 2 types of paints (tubes or pans), you can decide which you prefer before purchasing items for the 3 rd class. Feel free to bring in your own supplies on the first class if you have any. 


Description:

Come and join us for a watercolor journey to help boost your confidence with the media, developing a foundation that will build successful paintings. Take the sting out of learning the basic steps and different techniques of painting with watercolors in the beginning 4 -week session. We will cover everything from paper and paint choices, wet-on wet and wet-on dry techniques, creating textures and basic color theory. Paintings will include abstract subjects as well as things in nature, such as flowers, fruit and birds.

Intermediate Adult (18+) Watercolor

Time: Mondays, 10am-12pm

  • Session 1:  October 6, 13, 20 & 27  (Register by Oct. 4 @ 11pm)
  • Make up day for anyone who misses 1 day will be Tuesday, Dec. 1

Supplies to Bring to Class:

  1. Small palette ( metal , ceramic or plastic) 
  2. Palette with wells 
  3. Watercolor Paper Cold Pressed 140lb. (or higher) or Cotton (the very best/expensive) Best Brands I like; Strathmore, Arches
  4. Paints (Tube or pan set or both) *see suggestions below 
  5. Brushes : Natural hair (very best) or blend of synthetic and natural( both hold more water) Sizes Large Round , Large Wash brush, medium and small round Brand suggestions: Princeton, Kolinsky, Rosemary & Co, Raphael My favorite : Princeton Neptune set 
  6. Small towel 
  7. Flat board, such as a 11”x14” wrapped canvas board ( Dollar Store)
  8. Painters or Art tape. ** a more detailed list with pictures of items and links to websites for purchasing, will be emailed to you when you register.


*Paint Suggestions:

  • Suggested Professional Brands - Daniel Smith, Amazon tubes, Winsor Newton, Grumbacher
  • Suggested Student-Grade Brands -  Winsor Newton Cotman Prang (16-color pan set) 

 Colors Needed: A warm and cool color hue of the 3 Primary Colors, such as: 

  • Lemon yellow/Cadmium yellow 
  • Alizarin red/Cadmium red 
  • Ultra-Marine blue/Cerulean blue
  • Burnt Sienna 
  • Burnt Umber 
  • Payne’s Gray or Black 


Description:

Open to anyone who has taken any beginner course and has basic knowledge of the wet-on- wet and wet-on-dry techniques, adding textures and color theory. Our 4-week session will further your knowledge of these techniques and will include a deeper dive into composition, adding shadows, and color mixing. Focus will also include learning how to draw the subjects you will paint, which will include, but not limited to animal portraits, landscapes, and architectural structures.

Intermediate Adult (18+) Watercolor Art Classes
REGISTRATION FOR SESSION 1 - BY OCT 4

Adult (18+) Drawing & Painting

Time: Thursdays, 6pm-8pm 

Session Dates: 

  • Session 1:  September 4, 11, 18 & 25  (Register by Sept. 2 @ 11pm)
  • Session 2:  October 2, 9, 23 & 30  (Register by Sept. 30 @ 11pm)
  • Session 3:  November 6, 13 & 20* (Register by Nov. 4 @ 11pm) 


*On Nov. 20th, the Session 3 class will attend the American Watercolor Society Show with the instructor as guests of Mooresville Arts, at no extra cost to attend (ticketed event). You will have the opportunity to meet and mingle with other artists from all over the country. We hope you enjoy this exclusive opportunity!

  • Sketchbook/ OR Watercolor Pad (Size: Large enough for you to feel comfortable to work with (9x12 or 11x14 inch)

  • Round watercolor brushes (a small, medium, and large size)

Landscape Diptych Painting Class

Time: Thursdays, 9am-12pm 

Session Dates: 

  • August 28, September 4, 11, 18 & 25  (Register by Aug. 26 @ 11pm)


Instructor: Anne Harkness

Ages: 18+


Description:

During this 5 week class we will focus on the design of a horizontal landscape or cityscape that will be painted on a diptych (2 canvases side by side) or triptych (3 canvases side by side). The history of the Diptych/Triptych will be discussed and examples from history and present day will be shown. Each step will be demonstrated by the instructor, then experienced by the students. Horizontal landscape references will be provided but bring photos if you have them. If you are stuck and looking for something to energize you into forward momentum as a painter and you are looking to get out of the box of the traditional single painting process, this is the class for you. 


*Primarily this is an oil painting class, but you may use acrylic or watercolor if that is your preference.

Landscape Diptych Painting Classes
REGISTRATION FOR 5-WEEK SESSION - BY Aug 26

Artful Tapestry & Weaving

Time: Tuesdays, 1pm-3pm 

Session Dates: 

  •  September 16, 23, 30, October 7 & 14  (Register by Sept. 14 @ 11pm)


Instructor: Beverly Weaver

Ages: 18+


Description:

Students will use a small frame & nail loom which is provided in the supply fee for student s to keep . Colorful yarns are provided and handout instructions. Through demonstrations and personal coaching, students will learn the techniques of plain weave, stripes, shapes, Soumak outlining, and hatching. You’ll be proud of this artful sampler tapestry and want to frame it, add it to a tote or jacket, or enter it in the next gallery art show! 


Supplies to Bring to Class:

A supply fee $25 per student has been included into the class fee. This fee will cover a loom (students keep), yarns, handout instructions, yarn needles, and miscellaneous small tools. 


*Students should bring a tote bag and a small scissors for cutting fibers.

Artful Tapestry & Weaving Classes
REGISTRATION FOR 5-WEEK SESSION - BY Sept 14

Education Cancellation and Refund Policy

  • Registrants will receive a 100% refund for classes or workshops that Mooresville Arts cancels. Refunds are processed using the original credit card used during registration.
  • Registrants who cancel for any reason after registering and before 72 hours of the beginning of a class or workshop will receive a refund to the original credit card used during registration minus a 20% administrative fee.
  • Cancellations 72 hours before a class or workshop begins will not be refunded; registration fees are considered a donation to Mooresville Arts.
