Creating mosaics involves a process of taking broken pieces and reassembling them into something whole and beautiful, a practice that captivates Sue every time she works in her studio. Each piece is cut by hand and glued into place one at a time.
Sue was raised by an artistic mother but always thought her calling was the world of technology - until one day in 2017, when she hurriedly grabbed some colored pencils and her daughter’s “How to Draw” booklet as something to do while waiting for her daughter to attend a pottery class. After carefully following the instructions in the booklet, Sue had an epiphany that art was not only fun but opened up a whole new way to get in touch with her inner self. Already having previously discovered an interest in mosaics, Sue found herself obsessing over mosaics, drawing and other art forms. She began a quest to educate herself in fine art, taking many workshops from artists near and far, including renowned mosaic artists like Yakov and Angele Hanansen, Yulia Hanansen, Bonnie Fitzgerald, Kelly Knickerbocker and Marian Shapiro. Many of the early years were spent creating on her dining table.
Now, eight years and three and a half relocations later, Sue now has a studio in her basement in Winston-Salem. Inspired by nature, geometry and the plant world, Sue enjoys creating abstracted 2D wall art using glass smalti and ceramic. She loves to combine materials so that the sheen and textures play off of each other. She also enjoys adding whimsy and color to gardens with 2D and 3D pieces, including stepping stones, garden stakes and gazing balls.
