Home alone and bored
Many of us often put our creativity on hold so we can meet our daily needs — there’s nothing wrong with this. Today, this is a survival strategy. However, some people have time and perceive that they have nothing to do.
Senior citizens fit in this category. Some, not all, sit at home alone wondering when they can safely go out into the world and connect with others as they once did. Others may sit at home, but look out through eyes of hope seeking inspiration and finding joy in what is right before their eyes. No judgment, just an observation. It’s hard to stay positive, but it can be done.

What do all these paintings have in common? They were all painted with only four colors - white, yellow ochre, Cadmium Red and Ivory black -----"The Zorn Palette". Anders Zorn was a famous Swedish painter who lived 1860-1920.
When looking over his body of work you'll note that this limited palette is not the only one he used. But there are quite a few figure paintings where it is quite obvious that the Zorn palette is exactly what he used. In fact, in one particular painting, "Self Portrait with a Model", you have a clear view of his palette with those four colors.
Since I'm an avid portrait painter, I decided to experiment with this palette. Painting portraits is challenging --- but so rewarding! Simplifying my palette to something I know works gives me the freedom to focus on other aspects of portraiture, so I decided to
incorporate it into my workshops. I also ask my workshop participants to do "homework" before they come, preparing color charts using these four colors. That way they walk in the door with some sense of the range of flesh tones those four colors can produce. Not only does it produce beautiful flesh tones, but it virtually guarantees color harmony to your portrait.
Hope you'll come paint with us!!! – Robin Wellner. Check out Robin’s website to see more of her beautiful work. www.robinwellner.com/
