@Mooresville Arts Classroom
Led by Dick Handshaw
If you have taken photography classes with us at Mooresville Arts, we’re guessing you miss those Image Review sessions. Well we do too. So we are offering FREE Saturday morning Image Review sessions every month with one of our instructors.
This is not a critique and not a portfolio review. This is an opportunity for you to learn from other students and members as we talk about each other’s recent images. If you have been to our classes you know how fun and valuable this can be. The sessions will be lead by different Mooresville Arts faculty members.
As always, we encourage everyone to ask questions and voice their opinions. Bring your work, processed or not, on a flash drive (JPEG) or better yet, bring prints. Prints are always best. We will look at and discuss six to ten images from each participant.

The Cyanotype is a beautiful historical process using sunlight and photographic chemistry hand-applied to watercolor paper to yield wondrous blue and white photograms. This process was first discovered in 1842 by a young female botanist, Anna Atkins, and her mentor, William Henry Fox Talbot. Anna Atkins is considered the first female photographer, and later produced the first photographic book using the cyanotype process to document British Algae!
The Cyanotype has become popular among photographic artists who seek to step away from digital and return to the slower, more experimental processes of the past. In this workshop, students will each create multiple cyanotype prints using natural or found objects. All materials will be provided, and absolutely no experience is necessary!
This class will be outside. Please dress appropriately.

Close-up, or Macro photography, presents a few unique challenges, but actually it’s not that hard if you know a few simple tricks. In this 3 hour mini-workshop, you will learn and practice these tricks in the classroom, then have a chance to go outside and see how they work. Your instructor will accompany you in case you need help. Then we will return to the classroom to look at your images and talk about what worked and what didn’t.
A macro lens (or Micro lens if you have a Nikon) is the best tool for this, but add on close-up lenses or extension tubes will work as well. If you are buying a macro lens, longer lenses around 100 – 200 mm work best. A tripod is also a helpful tool.
This class is not difficult but is not intended for beginners. Beginners should look for our Digital Photography One.
You will learn these techniques for close-up work:
