Description
In this abstract painting workshop, you'll learn composition principles and basic color theory to create your unique artwork. The focus is on non-objective painting, with intuitive creation encouraged. All experience levels are welcome.
Students will:
- Learn essential design elements and principles
- Create balanced compositions
- Use color theory for mixing paints
- Explore masking tape block-method painting
- Receive in-progress feedback from the instructor
Supplies to Bring to Class
- A palette
- Brushes (recommended: Flat 12, Flat 8, Filbert 6, Round 2)
- Acrylic paint: primary colors, black and white (Liquitex Heavy Body is recommended), Palette
- Palette knife
- Canvas (12x16 inches or smaller recommended)
- Pencil & eraser

Description
Explore cold wax and oil techniques in this hands-on introductory workshop. Instructor Janet Visser will guide students through materials, tools, surfaces, and techniques, including color mixing, composition, and layering textures.
Students will learn to:
- Understand the history of cold wax
- Use essential tools and surfaces, including a Messermeister silicone spreader
- Master cold wax stages and wet-into-wet techniques
- Create foundational layers, textures, and marks
- Apply abstract design principles
- Finish and frame artwork
Refreshments are included.
Supplies to Bring to Class
Substrate:
- Canvas boards, oil paper, or wood panel (gesso before class)
- Sizes not bigger than 11x14. Please bring at least 2.
- Oil paints or water-soluble oils in a variety of colors,s plus black and white for mixing shades and tints.
Tools:
- Variety of pallet knives, bowl scraper, or an old credit card
- Brushes- flat & round bristle brushes work the best
- Paper pallet, Wax paper, Paper towel roll
Mediums:
- 16oz can of cold wax by Gamblin or Dolans Cold Wax
- Mixing mediums (Gambsol is better than turpentine)
- Drawing pad- any size
- Color wheel
- Drawing pencils

Description
During this 5 week class we will focus on the design of a horizontal landscape or cityscape that will be painted on a diptych (2 canvases side by side) or triptych (3 canvases side by side). The history of the Diptych/Triptych will be discussed and examples from history and present day will be shown. Each step will be demonstrated by the instructor, then experienced by the students. Horizontal landscape references will be provided but bring photos if you have them. If you are stuck and looking for something to energize you into forward momentum as a painter and you are looking to get out of the box of the traditional single painting process, this is the class for you.
*Primarily this is an oil painting class, but you may use acrylic or watercolor if that is your preference.
